Fantasy Football Time!

LPC Fantasy Football is Here!

LPC Fantasy Football is Here!

Who’s in?  The league is open and accepting members.  If you want in, send your name and email address to pjohnson@email.com and let me know you want to play.  The league will cap at 20 teams.  Last year’s league was a little smaller, but we had a great time.

Yahoo will be hosting once again, so you have to register a yahoo ID.  The league ID # is 588253, the league name is Life Pointe, and the password is lpc.  You can find more at Yahoo’s Fantasy Page.

What can you expect?  Lots of trash talk, lots of activity, and some really good fun.  We will also be getting together for a draft party on Saturday August 29.  More details on that as the final plans are nailed down.

Free Thoughts

-Thursday is the day I post my thoughts. It’s pretty simple, I just type whatever pops in my head.

-The shooting at Wal Mart yesterday was all the talk yesterday at work. Apparently an angry boyfriend walked into the garden center and shot his former girlfriend who had just taken out a restraining order against him. He then fled to his home where he shot himself.

-The stock market doesn’t seem to like the US move toward socialism. Our economy was sick under President Bush, Obama apparently wants to finish it off.

-Hurricane season is just around the corner. I think I am going to start getting my supplies together now. Be prepared!

-Only 2 months since football season has ended, and I am having withdrawals. I hate football offseason. The Dolphins and Canes have a lot to look forward to this year.

-We are going to be even more organized in this year’s fantasy football season.

-The major football related news right now is the boat with the NFL players and agent whose 21 foot boat capsized in the Gulf of Mexico in up to 15 foot seas. Friends of mine suggested that probably they plowed the nose of the boat into a large wave going too fast while rushing to get in, or they got sideways and were flipped by a big wave.

-Max had his little bit of masculinity removed this past Friday. It’s not bad enough that everybody mistakes him for a her, now he has been altered. Poor fella.

-My vacation cruise is exactly one month away from today. Snorkeling, hiking, and relaxing here we come.

-Marcela really hooked me up on Sunday. She made some excellent paella mixta with chicken, chorizo, octopus, little necks, muscles, shrimp, and scallops.

-I have said it before and I’ll say it again, I cannot wait for the TSP Anthems CD to be available.

-The work that Trav, the guys from TSP and the People for Care and Learning are doing for the people of Cambodia is God’s work. I’m so proud of them.

-I will see some of you this Sunday at the theater as we come together to worship, enjoy and learn from each other, be inspired, and be the church.

The Fantasy Football Report

The playoffs are now set. Ritz survived the cut with a big TD by Steven Smith which had a duel effect: it gave him 10 points, and it took several points away from Tampa Bay defense which was his oppositions D. That one play won the game and sealed his playoff position. With Jesse’s win over me, he also sealed a spot. The Dead Skins also lost in the final week, and despite a 4-way tie for first, he maintained the #1 seed in the playoffs and a meeting with Fuser’s dead team by virtue of points. Only 32 points separates 1st through 3rd.

The most interesting factoids from the season are: the team with the most points by far (Bachrach) did not make the playoffs, and the team with the fewest points by far (Jesse’s Fuser Heads) did make the playoffs. The final standings are…

#1. Dead Skins 8-5 with 1183 points
#2. Ritz 8-5 with 1181 points
#3. Citizen Cane 8-5 with 1151 points
#4. Fuser Heads 8-5 with 1037 points
#5. Bachrach 7-6 with 1280 points
#6. Skins 5-8 with 1111 points
#7. TJ Big Doggs 5-8 with 1087 points
#8. Turkey Buzzards 3-10 with 1050 points

In the playoffs, I play Ritz, and Dead Skins face the Fuser Heads. The winner of that game plays for the championship. In the consolation round, Bachrach plays the Turkey Buzzards, and Trav’s Doggs plays the Skins.

This has by far been the most competitive league I have seen. The great comeback by Bachrach was amazing, and he basically came up one play short of being the favored team to win the title. Now I would say that Fuzzy’s Dead Skins look pretty tough. From top to bottom, every team was competitive, except Jesse’s. Had he managed his team, he would have been #1 hands down. Stay tuned for the next couple weeks as I hand out awards to the top managers and players.

In pro football pickem, I have continued my run toward the top. I am now only 2 points out of first having recorded the league’s best points once again. If I have a couple more weeks like this, I will surpass Alex and Chris who are both tied for first place.

Fair Thoughts

  • As of last Friday, it is Christmas season.  I always consider the Christmas season starting as soon as Thanksgiving day is over.
  • Marcela has already packaged and wrapped presents and put up a couple Christmas trees.  Max even had a Santa hat on last night.  He didn’t like it very much.
  • I finished the last of the leftover Thanksgiving turkey today.  I made turkey salad and in the words of cousin Eddy, “it was gooo-ooood.”
  • We watched Rudolph the Red-Nosed Raindeer clay-mation show two nights ago.  We plan on watching Santa Claus is Coming to Town this weekend.  Those are two of my favorite Christmas specials.
  • My all time favorite Christmas movies are:
  1. It’s a Wonderful Life
  2. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
  3. A Christmas Story (what kid wouldn’t want a Red Rider BB Gun?)
  4. Home Alone
  • Sean Avery of the NHL’s Dallas Stars was suspended indefinitely for calling his ex-girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert of 24 his “sloppy seconds” because she is now dating another NHL player.  Many people are crying “FREE SPEECH VIOLATION!”  For those who are constitutionally challenged, this is no 1st Amendment violation.
  • While I do not agree with a harsh suspension due to the lack of even-handedness across the NHL to players who have said much worse, it is the discretion of the NHL to determine what language reflects poorly on them concerning his player conduct clause in his $15.5 million 4-year contract.  The Standard Player Contract he signed specifically states that his conduct reflects on the NHL on and off the rink and “must be held to the highest standard of honesty, morality, fair play, and sportsmanship, and to refrain from conduct detrimental to the best interest of the Club, the League or professional hockey.”
  • My disagreement is not that the NHL does not have the right to do such, but that they are coming down hard on this idiot for insulting his Ex while they have done little more than a slap on the wrist for some players who have made racist comments, physically attacked players on the ice unprovoked, and have committed felonies off the rink.  The NHL got this one wrong, but so did Avery.  Maybe he will learn to keep his mouth shut.
  • I got my Curve in the mail yesterday.  It is set up and running smoothly.  My old BlackBerry has been spotty, signal was degrading, camera stopped working, and battery was fading.  I had about 5 days left on my Warranty when I called to see about a new phone.  That saved me hundreds of dollars.
  • Originally, I had the charcoal colored Curve, and they sent me the red Curve in the mail.  I like the red one better!
  • Our fantasy football league is winding down with one more regular season game followed by the two game playoffs.  Right now, Mark Similey and I are the only two who have wrapped up our playoff spot.  Ritz, after starting 6-1 has lost 4 of his last 5 and really needs to win his last game to make the playoffs.  Jesse who also started 6-1 has lost 4 of his last 5 and needs to win this week to ensure that he makes the playoffs.
  • This has been a super competitive league.  3 teams are stilly vying for 2 playoff spots in the final week.  No teams had clinched until the second to last week of the season.  I have never seen a league with so much parity.  I have also only been in a league one other time with Trav when he did not make the playoffs.  That was the year that the commish cheated and we both set the earth on fire before being kicked out of the league.
  • Marcela and I purchased bicycles on Black Friday.  I got a cool little mountain bike for all the mountains here in FL, and Marcela got a multi-speed hybrid.
  • I have to go, Max just did something bad!

Fantasy Football Report

More big news in LPC fantasy football. Two teams have now clinched playoff spots. Fuzzy’s Dead Skins clinch with his win over Ritz, and I clinched with a win over Paul’s Skins. That leaves two spots open with one game to play. By far this has been the most competitive league I have been in. Bachrach is one game out of first with the league’s highest point total. If the Fuser’s or Ritz lose combine with a Bachrach win, Bachrach makes the playoffs and either Ritz or Jesse would be out. What a great run by Bachrach to finish the season regardless of the last week.

The new league standings are:

#1. Dead Skins 8-4 (clinched)
#2. Citizen Cane 8-4 (clinched)
#3. Ritz 7-5
#4. Fusers 7-5
#5. Bachrach 6-6
#6. Trav’s Big Dogs 5-7
#7. Skins (Paul) 4-8
#8. Turkey Buzzards 3-9

In Second Chance LPC Alex is in first place by one game, Chris Day trails by 1 in second, Paul is back 3, and I am in 4th by 4 points. With a couple good weeks, I could take over first, or I could drop behind James H with a bad week.

Monday Armchair QB

We had a mixed bag this weekend in South Florida for football.  The idea of the Canes winning an ACC title came to a smashing halt, while the Dolphins playoff chances advanced.

The Canes were whipped by the Wolfpack of NC State.  The game looked more than competitive early in the second quarter when Baby James scored a TD to put Miami up 14-7, and still looked good in the 3rd quarter when James did it again to put Miami up 21-20.  It was over when Miami fell behind 38-21 late in the 4th.  We added a meaningless TD with less than a minute to play.  That leaves VT with the division championship by virtue of their head-to-head win vs Ga Tech.  Tech would have probably been the coastal champ had we won due to their strong win over UGA and superior overall rank and record.  You are welcome, VT.

In the NFL, the Dolphins did what they needed to do even though it wasn’t very pretty.  Pennington was effective, Ronnie and Ricky did their thing, but it was the defense that deserves the accolades.  The Dolphin D held the potent St. Louis attack in check in scoring position.  With numerous scoring opportunities, the Rams could only muster 4 fieldgoals, no TDs, and Miami won the turnover battle 3-1.  It was also interesting that Miami just could not generate the same pressure on the QB that they normally do.  That meant zero sacks yesterday.  Miami was the only AFC East team to win yesterday.  We gained a full game on everyone in the division.  Miami’s record stands at 7-5 with a game remaining against the Jets.  We are 1 game back of the division lead, and one game back of the wildcard.  It is not exactly likely that we will make the playoffs, but it is not out of the question.

Two teams will clinch playoff spots this week in our LPC FFL.  I will beat Paul unless Owen Daniels gets negative 4, and the Dead Skins will clinch by beating Ritz like a rented mule.  The big news is that Bachrach is going to beat Jesse’s Fuserheads.  That leaves Jesse and Ritz vulnerable.  If Bachrach wins next week, and either of those two lose, they will miss the playoffs due to points.  Bachrach has the league’s highest point total.

In the second chance, I gained points on first place.  I am only 4 total points back even though I had a bad week.  That is what happens when only 2 teams win at home.  It makes for bad results in pickem.

The Fantasy Football Report

What’s up with this “see-saw” league? The top 3 teams lost this week, Pastor Trav is toast, Oral’s Bachrach squad has fought his way into contention, and the Turkey Buzzards made me its latest victim as a spoiler. That makes 3 in a row! The title of the leagues hottest team has been passed from me to The Buzzards.

Ritz lost his 4th, but despite the loss took over first place. Pastor Travis lost by just a few yards which he needed to make up the 1 point margin of difference. That makes a four-way-tie for first place with about 15 points separating 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Jesse’s Fuser’s have one of the lowest point totals in the league and leaves him most vulnerable to being passed by points if he loses his remaining two games while Bachrach wins his two. Not one team has secured a playoff spot technically, because Bachrach has the leagues highest point total. A two game losing skid for any top 4 team combined with 2 wins for Bachrach would equal a disastrous choke and fall from the playoffs.

The League Standings

#1. Ritz 7-4
#2. The Citizen Cane 7-4
#3. Dead Skins 7-4
#4. Fuser Heads 7-4
#5. Bachrach 5-6
#6. Skins 4-7
#7. Big Doggs 4-7
#8. Turkey Buzzards 3-8

The playoffs are not yet set in stone as you can see. It has been a competitive league with parity from top to bottom. I believe at least two teams will clinch playoff spots next week, since there are only two weeks until the playoffs begin. If Bachrach loses, all 4 top teams will clinch playoff birth simultaneously, and at the same time too.

As for Vegas Pickem, I declare myself the winner since the other three teams have given up on passing me. I had a strong week with 9 correct picks out of 16.

In 2nd Chance, yours truly was the only team to successfully pick the New Yorks Jets to defeat the Tennessee Titans. That qualifies me for genius status. I also had the best pickset of the whole group for the second time this year. I still have a shot at winning that one. Until later…

Edited to update the standings.  I am actually in second place by one point.
